Aldi boss Foley in shock departure

In: Retailers, People, Industry news

| More

Paul Foley, ex-AldiPaul Foley (pictured) has stepped down from the top job at Aldi in the UK and Ireland with immediate effect.

The decision for Foley to step down as MD was by mutual consent, Aldi said. Foley will be replaced at the helm by Armin Burger – a name not widely known in the UK grocery industry.

“I have enjoyed my 20 years with Aldi and worked with a fantastic team of directors, managers, staff and business partners,” Foley said in a statement, which claimed he would pursue new business interests.

Aldi said Foley was widely credited as challenging and changing traditional market perceptions to establish the discounter as a leading brand offering high-quality and best-value products.

Its plans for future development remain unchanged, the retailer added.

Hmmm I wonder if Malcolm Walker at Iceland might be stepping down? Foley started at Bejam and was there for over ten years before Iceland took them over.Food for thought

I didn't say time at the check out was enjoyable, what is was was an opportunity to sell them more stuff. I am sure he did an excellent job and within the retail industry it is very much jobs for the boys, so I am sure he will pop up somewhere within the discount retail market, good luck to him.

I can't believe you think that customers want to wait at checkouts and find that enjoyable
Foley was an innovator who truly got 6 sigma
The Aldi accolades this year have been phenomenal as is the increase in market share and turnover
I will hazard a guess that he will be appearing as in a much advanced position in the grocery sector
'Time was up' ......left on a high I'd say....Snigger snigger

I saw Foley at the British retail consortium and I asked him about his strange ideals because he said that he wanted the check outs to work extra fast so that customers could come in and out quickly, I said that surely he wanted customers to enjoy their experience and also make spur of the moment purchases form his till poitn stock and his reply was "no the quicker they come in and get out the better" much to everyones surprise in the room.

I imagine his time was up with Aldi because he was out of his depth.

Actually it was 2007, which puts Burger at 45/46.

Major shock and I dont think we are ever going to find out why, Aldi being as secretive as it is.

Not much is known about Armin Burger to start with, but a bit of digging sees that he is a bit of a Aldi legend having grown the market share in Austria to over 11%. He has been a real innovator with organic private labels and traceable produce, an ex farmer as well.

This is from the gma online - http://www.gmaonline.org/publications/iar/2007/june.htm

Like all Aldi managers, the 44-year-old Burger has come up through the business. The son of a farmer in the Black Forest, he left his village to make his career with Aldi, and was appointed general director for Aldi's operations in Austria in 1999. In eight years, he managed to nearly double Aldi's turnover and store numbers in the Alpine republic, taking it to the number three position with a market share of 11 percent in 2006, more than it holds in Germany (10.6 percent). Described as the 'silent tycoon,' he developed industry-leading initiatives such as

organic private labels, fresh pre-packed meat and locally produced, traceable dairy, fruit and vegetable products – initiatives that are now being implemented elsewhere. Farmers are being paid a premium, perhaps in tribute to Burger’s own farm background.

Not sure when the article was written as it puts his age at 44 (Burger).

What odds on Foley arriving at Tesco? I really dont know, stunned as there was no hint of this.
