New warning over processed meat cancer threat

In: Industry news, Meat, fish and poultry

A charity has reignited the debate over processed meat and cancer by issuing a new warning to parents.

The World Cancer Research Fund is warning parents not to fill kids’ lunchboxes with ham sandwiches and other items containing processed meat due to fears over the risk of bowel cancer.

The charity said that despite a lack of research over a cancer link in children, the “convincing” evidence in adults meant kids should avoid eating processed meat wherever possible.

A similar warning from the charity last year angered suppliers of ham, bacon and salami, who pointed out that links between processed meat and cancer remained unproven.

Now, I'm no scientist or expert on the food industry but I am a parent an think the key word in the scentence is 'fill'  kids lunch boxes with ham and processed meats!

I subscribe to the train of thought that there's no such thing as bad food just bad diet, a little bit of what you fancy does you good. Balance the kids eat when they're at home cos as sure as apples is apples, when your back's turned they'll be down the chippy!!!

A threat to wealth you say? Wealth before health then?

There is not a lack of evidence- the advice is based on a throrough report that took 6 years to produce, analysed 22,000 studies, narrowed it down to 7000 relevant studies... this is not 'scaremongering'.

I understand business, and I'm sure the scientists do too- preservatives make the product last longer on the shelf, which means more profit for the producers and the supermarkets. But the real issue is: are the preservatives contributing to cancer? That is the specific question, which is not answered in the 2007 Cancer Report but that should be addressed further.
Invoking the "BSC" [sic] scandals is not relevant here. Address the issue at hand.

Another threat to the food industry and wealth creating jobs therein.   How can the evidence be convincing if there is a lack of it?
Once again the food industry has to defend itself from scaremongering probably thought up by people who know little or nothing about food and do not understand business.
Remember the BSC debacle and the warnings issued by the so called self appointed experts that predicted hundreds of thousands of deaths and wiped out millions from our meat exports.
Long live delicious ham sandwiches and bacon butties!
