The controversial topic of GM is back in the news – the government’s chief scientist has said we have no choice but to go GM if mass starvation is to be avoided. Certainly it seems likely we’ll have no choice – we successive governments determined to foist the technology on consumers.
You can make your own mind up about whether that position is really to do with saving undernourished folk in poorer parts of the globe. The Daily Telegraph reports.
Also in the Telegraph, more alarming figures about the impact of alcohol consumption on our health. Apparently hospital admissions due to drink reached 860,000 in the past year. While the drinks industry is certainly doing its bit to combat irresponsible drinking, that number is still pretty shocking.
The Daily Mail, meanwhile, blames the booze for a “surge in liver disease” among the middle-aged. Perhaps that’s why luxury goods group LVMH has seen sales of its Champagne go a little flat, as the Telegraph reports.
The Independent prefers to take a metaphorical swig of energy drinks, asking whether the sugar and caffeine-heavy beverages really do what they claim (not the bit about ‘giving you wings’, presumably).
And the Daily Express takes a close look at nuts – namely, which ones are best for your health.
Yup, it’s a pretty quiet day for serious food news.
