‘Healthy’ lunchbox favourites loaded with salt and sugar

Dairylea LunchablesRobinsons, Kellogg’s and Dairylea have been slammed for loading kids' lunchbox snacks with high levels of sugar and salt, in a new Which? report.

The consumer watchdog tested a variety of popular lunchbox snacks but singled out the Robinsons Fruit Shoot orange juice drink, which was found to contain 23 grams of sugar in one 200ml bottle.

It also revealed that sugar accounts for almost a third of a 25g Kellogg’s Frosties Cereal & Milk bar, while a pack of Dairylea Lunchables Ham ‘n’ Cheese crackers contains 1.8g of salt – more than half the government’s RDA for children aged four to six.

Parents were increasingly confused by the product labels of supposedly healthy kids snacks, said Which? editor Martyn Hocking, who called for tougher rules on nutritional value claims.

“Parents should be able to pick out healthy products for their kids’ lunchboxes, but what you see isn’t always what you get,” he said. “Some products give the impression of being healthy, but are full of salt and sugar.”
