Waitrose's approach to selling wine won it two prestigious industry accolades this week at the Drinks Retailing Awards hosted by OLN.
The Grocer's sister magazine named the chain multiple grocer of the year and honoured Waitrose wine supremo Julian Brind with a lifetime achievement in recognition of his work in the trade. Brind has been at the heart of the multiple's wine strategy for more than 30 years and is now employed as a consultant for Waitrose.
He is credited with introducing New Zealand wine to UK shelves as well as for his work in promoting staff training initiatives.
Sainsbury was also among the winners scooping a gong for wine retailer of the year, with Marks & Spencer and Majestic also nominated.
Bargain Booze won multiple specialist of the year, beating First Quench and Oddbins which lost out despite offering one of the most diverse ranges in the business.
The awards took place at London's Landmark Hotel on Thursday night.
