Subway at Lidl

Subway has opened its first outlet inside a Lidl store

The first Subway franchise to be housed within a Lidl supermarket opened today.

The 800 sq ft sandwich shop is operated by Subway franchisee Raj Rao, who now has 12 outlets and is located within the Lidl supermarket just outside Cromer in Norfolk.

Subway is increasingly looking to open stores in what it calls ‘non-traditional locations’ such as forecourt sites, within convenience stores, universities and colleges. It currently operates more than 300 of these stores in the UK.

While this is the first tie-up with Lidl, Subway area development manager for the UK and Ireland Trevor Haynes is hopeful it could be the first of many.

“The simple operations that are involved in running a Subway franchise and the convenience offer make it a perfect fit for these style locations,” he said. “The partnership with Lidl is the first of its kind and we are excited to see what this could lead to in the future.”

Last month Subway announced a major extension of its tie-up with leading forecourt operator Euro Garages, adding a further 70 concessions to the 30 it already operates by 2016, with the creation of around 700 jobs.
