Sainsbury’s is cutting the price of a litre of petrol by 4p from today.

The move sparked similar moves by competitors, with Tesco and Asda both announcing a 3p cut on petrol prices.

“We know that fuel is a big part of many customers’ weekly budget so we’re keen to do anything we can to help. From tomorrow our petrol prices will drop by 4p per litre with diesel dropping by 3p per litre,” said Sainsbury’s head of fuel Richard Crampton.

Tesco petrol category director Peter Cattell said: “Tesco is dropping the price of both petrol and diesel by up to 3p per litre from tomorrow morning. As Britain’s biggest petrol retailer with 496 forecourts, more motorists make savings at Tesco pumps than at any other fuel retailer.”

Announcing its own cuts, Asda said consumers at its forecourts would pay no more than 134.7ppl on unleaded and 141.7ppl on diesel. “When we do drop prices, we drop them everywhere, setting a maximum national price cap for our customer, which means they all benefit from our low prices, regardless of where they live,” said Asda petrol trading director Andy Peake.

  • Typical they just put there prices up 6p at my local Sainsburys last week then they announce a 4p cut today. Looks like they are doing something good but in reality there still ripping us off.

  • I agree with the previous comment by Scott. There is no justifiable reason for fuel to be the extortionate price that it is. The fuel companies are making massive profits, as is the Government with its duty and then tax on duty (VAT). What has happened to the public indignation - truckers blockaded the oil refineries when fuel hit £0.75 per litre. Now it is double that and no-one is protesting!!
