Channel Islands Co-operative Society has posted like-for-like food sales growth of 4.5%.

The society, which has stores on Jersey and Guernsey, said food sales hit £150.6m in the year to 15 January. Total sales rose 4.2% to £162.8m during the period.

The sales hike comes despite high levels of unemployment, as well as the entry of Waitrose.

Its stores on Guernsey were “exceptionally well supported”, while sales on Jersey increased “by a lower percentage”.
