The Co-operative Group has launched a competition giving community groups and neighbourhoods the chance to win a street party.

The society’s food business said people holding street parties over the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend could win £100 worth of vouchers from The Co-op to put towards the food, together with a party pack including red, white and blue bunting, balloons, papers cups and plates, and Union Jack flags. A hundred of the packs are up for grabs.

The Local Government Association had received a bumper number of applications for road closures for street parties, The Co-op said.

“For millions of people, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is a celebration of everything that’s great about Britain, and street parties are a quintessentially British way to celebrate,” said Helen Nunn, head of marketing for The Co-op’s food business.

“They are great neighbourhood occasions and, as a retailer at the heart of the communities in which we trade, we’re getting behind the Jubilee celebrations at a local level with a helping hand to make people’s street parties extra special and memorable.”

The society will also sell teddy bear gingerbread biscuits, limited edition doughnuts and two limited-edition, premium own-brand British beers from 2 May.

  • This is a fantastic community idea by the Co-op. Our street is having a party and it would be wonderful if our local Cop-op would participate. I still remember my mothers Cop-op number as I was sent back to the shop many, many times when I had forgotton to pass it on when paying - hahaha.(4531). We're hoping for a fabulous and fun day with our neighbours and the children. A big thank you to the Co-op and good luck to all those (like me) who take the time to apply for this kind and generous offer.

  • We are are arranging a street party and trying to make it a day where community spirit is the winner. We would love and appreciate the Co Op getting involved with our party as the North End Branch is at the heart of our community. Our aim is simple neighbours to meet each other maybe for the first time and for children to have a day to remember as i did with The Queens Silver Jubilee in 1977

  • I am organising a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Street Party and cordially invite the Co Op to participate in making this a memorable and successful event with a view to holding it annually as the Big Lunch does and keeping up the community spirit as caring and sharing time. Better to organise some fun than organising crimes. Come on Co Op join us and have some fun we know you're Good with Food.

  • The excitement is building, not long to go now and the fun begins. Having had a successful Silver Jubilee Street Party we are up for another day of great community spirit.

We are lucky to have a small green at the end of our Cul de Suc so it is safe for all ages to join in all the activities. Bouncy Castle, Ceroc Dancing, Egg and Spoon race, three legged race, tug o war, wet sponge stocks, football highest score kickout, face painting, treasure hunt, spinning plates, duck fishing, soft paly area for todlers, BBQ, Disco, Tombola, Chaos Olympics which is great fun and involves everyone (total madness) - the list goes on ending with a grand finale of fireworks. Such a memerable and fun event.

Since the Silver Jubilee our community spirit has lived on, we are unique in that all the neighbours know and care about each other. Co-op you would be so very welcome to join in the fun and meet our amazing neighbours, families and friends, please come and be our honoury guest.
