Smiths News buys Dutch bookseller Houtschild
Smiths News has expanded its Bertrams book business once again with the acquisition of Houtschild Internationale Boekhandel from Blackwell UK for €700,000 (£567,826).
Houtschild, based in the Netherlands, is a supplier of books and journals into academic libraries and government institutions across Northern Europe. It generated sales of €4.9m (£3.98m).
“Houtschild represents a clear international strategic step for Bertrams consistent with our stated aims,” said Smiths chief executive Mark Cashmore.
“The group will benefit from synergies, an increase in scale and a stronger sales presence in Northern Europe, as well as accelerating the digital platform roll-out.”
This is the second acquisition for Smiths in as many months. In April it acquired Hedgelane, an independent distributor to the education and care sectors, for £38m.
And last June it paid £20m for the remaining book business of the now-defunct newstrade wholesaler Dawson News.
