Some 91% of Aldi’s own-label products are just as good as the big brands, a survey by Manchester Metropolitan University has claimed.

The survey, which tested 11 everyday basket items, including cereal, bread, tea, lemonade, ketchup and baked beans, also found 27% of Aldi’s own-label lines rated significantly better than their branded counterparts.

Kellogg's Special K was the only big brand testers enjoyed more than the Aldi equivalent.

As many as 50 male and female testers aged between 18 and 84 took part in the survey.

"When consumers tested the samples with no information about their origin or packaging, they liked many of the unbranded household staples just as much as their branded counterparts,” said Dr Kritika Mahadevan from Manchester Metropolitan University.
