Halifax customers will soon get cashback offers when they shop at Morrisons and Ocado, as well as other retailers

Halifax customers will start receiving cashback on their Morrisons and Ocado shops from September.

The bank’s customers could get a 5-15% discount on their shop when they pay with their Halifax card. There is no need to print out vouchers or codes – all they have to do is sign up to the cashback offer via their internet banking statement.

The scheme, called Halifax Cashback Extras, is being run by Lloyds Banking Group in association with card-linked marketing specialists Cardlytics.

The cashback offers will be worked out on the basis of transaction data from the bank, which will enable retailers to target very specific groups such as lapsed customers in a certain income bracket, and then track exactly how many respond to offers.

Cardlytics said it would also be able to support shop openings and revamps by offering discounts to customers in certain postcodes.

Although consumers will have to opt in to start taking advantage of the offers, Cardlytics said it expected take-up to be high.

“We expect to see millions of customers sign up and join the programme. The relevance of the offers means it will resonate well with consumers,” said Cardlytics’ UK managing director Charlie Humphreys.

In the US, Cardlytics now works with approximately 400 banks, including three of the top six. It claimed that retailers who have taken part in the US have seen incremental sales growth of up to 30% depending on the category.

In addition to Ocado and Morrisons, the initial group of retail partners in the UK includes Argos, Homebase, New Look and Pets at Home.
