Asda has infuriated its big four rivals with the Asda Price Guarantee. Now independent retailer Pets Corner is taking on Asda and Tesco by promising to be cheaper on “loads” of products.

The Sussex-based chain is running a Price Pledge across its 62 stores and website promising to cost less than the retail giants on petfood lines.

It is selling a 3kg bag of Bakers Gravy Bites for £6.19, which it claims is 52p cheaper than Tesco and 6p cheaper than Asda. It also offers savings of up to 16p on Bakers Adult 3kg, 14p on Go-Cat 2kg and 6p on a Whiskas Adult 12-pack.

Shoppers can make further savings online because food and treat lines are up to 10% cheaper on its website while accessories are 20% cheaper.

Pets Corner this week revealed a 30% hike in sales to £5.8m in the past three months, with pre-tax profits up 105% to £1.14m. Like-for-like sales were up 8.8%. It plans to grow its estate by 15 stores a year and predicts turnover will grow from £21m to £24m in 2011.

“Pets Corner is the Waitrose of the pet store market,” said CEO Dean Richmond. “We go the extra mile with staff training and incentivisation; our store layouts are planned to suit the needs of customers; and we sell own-label premium food on which our staff are specifically trained to advise customers. The result is a rapidly growing store base and a higher calibre of customer spending more money per visit to the store.”
