Poundland CEO Jim McCarthy won The Grocer Cup for Outstanding Business Achievement at the IGD Food Industry Awards last week.

McCarthy scooped the prestigious gong after polling the most votes from readers of The Grocer, seeing off a shortlist of senior industry players including Dalton Philips, Mark Price, Paul Walsh and Ranjit Singh Boparan.

The award comes after a year in which Poundland has continued to make headlines with impressive sales figures and ambitious store expansions.

“I was delighted to receive this prestigious award and felt very proud for my team who are an inspiration to me,” said McCarthy. “I sincerely thank all the people who voted for me. It’s wonderful to be recognised by my peers across the industry in this unique way. I am very grateful and will not forget the evening, which for me and my senior team was unforgettable.”

Poundland has over 360 stores in the UK and a fortnight ago broke into Europe, opening two Dealz stores in the Republic of Ireland.
