Sir Terry Leahy could be set for a dramatic return to grocery.

The mystery bidder for Irish supplier Greencore is Clayton Dubilier & Rice, the US private equity group that handed Sir Terry a part-time advisory role earlier this year.

News of the former Tesco boss’s involvement comes after Greencore last month confirmed it was the subject of an approach from a then-unidentified bidder.

Greencore had been touted as a possible takeover target following the collapse of its proposed merger with Northern Foods. It subsequently snapped up Uniq in a bid to stave off circling suitors.
