David Sands has become the third of The Grocer’s Top 50 independent grocery retailers to be acquired in just 14 months.

The 200-year-old Scottish c-store, 29th in the current Top 50, revealed this week it had agreed a deal to be taken over by The Co-op Group. The deal, for an undisclosed sum, is subject to OFT approval and is expected to be completed in the next two months.

“There are many similarities between David Sands and The Co-op - we share many values, including supporting local suppliers - and I have every confidence they will continue to invest in, grow and develop our stores and our people in the future,” said CEO David Sands.

A spokesman for The Co-op Group added: “Like The Co-operative, which has been trading in Scotland for more than 200 years, David Sands has a rich heritage and is a great business with stores at the heart of the communities in which it trades.

“We look forward to working with its local suppliers and employees to develop the business.”
