The Co-op axes seven top managers from food arm as more redundancies loom
The Co-operative Group has made seven senior managers from its food business redundant and is set to announce further cuts next month.
The news came in a letter to staff by acting Co-op Group Food chief executive Sean Toal, leaked this week to media outlets including The Grocer. The letter talks of “very extreme challenges” facing the business and a need “to ensure that our cost base is better aligned with our sales and profits”.
The review encompasses field support teams in retail operations and logistics below direct reports . It only affects the society’s food business and does not include customer-facing roles in stores and depots. A spokeswoman for The Co-op confirmed the redundancies.
“Our food business is continuing to modernise and change, putting the customer at the heart of everything we do,” she said.
“Following an in-depth review across the food business, a new operating model has been announced. It is designed to create a better business for our customers at the same time as reducing costs by eliminating duplication and improving efficiencies.
“Regrettably, this will necessitate a number of changes to our current structure and seven senior managers will be leaving the business. We are currently finalising the proposed new structures in each of the function areas and these will be announced towards the end of February.”
