More than 80 jobs will go after Premier Foods announced plans to close one of its Hovis bakeries.

The Eastleigh site in Hampshire was the smallest of a dozen bakeries producing Hovis.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the utilisation and cost effectiveness of the Hovis supply chain, we have recently undertaken a review of our Eastleigh Bakery in the context of our future manufacturing requirements,” Premier said.

“As a result, the company is proposing that its bakery at Eastleigh will cease production no later than mid-June.”

A consultation has begun with the 82 staff facing the axe.

Premier said the Hovis distribution centre also at Eastleigh, which employs 90 staff, would not be affected by the closure.
