Fifty years since the ring pull was invented, it has finally made its way to Princes canned ham.

From next month, the company will be replacing the traditional key opening on its pear-shaped canned ham tins with a ring pull.

“We’re improving functionality and clearly communicating it on pack to drive sales,” said marketing director Neil Brownbill. The move followed consumer research and test marketing, he added.

Value sales of Princes canned meats have fallen 3.9% year-on-year [Nielsen 52w/e 3 September 2011].
