Everybody loves Easter. It’s filled with chocolate, after all. But last spring, while the UK enjoyed a freakish heatwave, sales of chocolate melted as shoppers splashed out on sausages, charcoal and suntan lotion instead.
Fortunately, Easter sales didn’t collapse completely. Like everyone does when it gets really hot, they just slowed down a little, growing 4.8% in value and 6.4% in volume compared with 9.2% and 16.2% respectively in 2010.
But the pressure is now on to restore the market to strong growth in what is set to be a challenging year even if the weather is more co-operative - thanks to Easter Sunday falling a fortnight earlier than in 2011.
