Bacon butties give Starbucks a breakfast boost
A new breakfast range has helped Starbucks to record its eighth consecutive quarter of growth in the UK.
The coffee chain like-for-like sales in the three months to 3 July were “healthy, single-digit growth”. Its new breakfast range, including a British bacon buttie, caused a 50% spike in morning sales in June, a spokeswoman said.
Starbucks reported that it had cut 250,000 road deliveries to UK and Ireland stores during the quarter. The period also saw its bottled Frappuccino rolled out into over 3,000 grocery and forecourt stores.
With London its best performing region, Stabucks confirmed plans to renovate 20 flagship locations before the Olympic Games next year.
“We are very encouraged by continuing sales growth and how well customers have received our new breakfast range despite trading conditions in the UK remaining tough, especially with increasing fuel and food bills,” said Darcy Willson-Rymer, the chain’s outgoing UK & Ireland managing director.
Kris Engskov will take over from Willson-Rymer in September. Willson-Rymer will step in as chief executive of Clinton Cards in October.
Globally Starbucks’ total sales increased 12% to $2.9bn. Like-for-likes in the US rose 8%, with international sales up 5%.
