Costa Coffee has defied the gloom on the high street after posting a bumper rise in sales for the past quarter.

UK sales for the 11 weeks to 18 August grew by 6.6% on a like-for-like basis, the Whitbread-owned chain said yesterday. Total sales for the first half of the year surged by almost 23% to £351.3m.

“The whole coffee shop market is one that continues to grow,” said Whitbread finance director Christopher Rogers.

“It remains an affordable treat. I am not sure we are taking market share from anyone.”
