RSPCA: all abattoirs should install CCTV
The RSPCA has called for CCTV to be made compulsory in every abattoir in a bid to stamp out animal cruelty.
Some supermarkets have already persuaded suppliers to install CCTV cameras in the abattoirs they use – a move encouraged by the FSA. However, the RSPCA now wants the FSA to make CCTV use compulsory.
“The public has a right to expect that all farmed animals have as painless and humane an end to their lives as possible,” said Dr Mark Cooper, senior scientific manager for the RSPCA’s farm animals science team. Cameras acted as a security measure and a training aid, he added.
On Tuesday, the FSA board resolved to continue encouraging abattoirs to install CCTV systems and approved guidelines for best practice. However, it stopped short of recommending compulsory installation.
