The NFU is publishing an online list naming retailers, foodservice companies and manufacturers that have pledged to buy higher-welfare eggs.

New EU legislation that came into force on 1 January outlaws battery cages. Thirteen EU countries are not compliant, raising the prospect of cheaper battery eggs coming to the UK, undercutting British producers.

The Good Egg list goes online on Monday and will include the big retailers, ABF, Premier Foods, UB and foodservice companies.
