Warner Edwards gin

Distiller Warner Edwards is to repeat a public ‘hedgerow harvest’ that helped it source enough fruit to start production of its first sloe gin.

The company last month enlisted the help of locals to pick fruit from hedgerows in exchange for vouchers or a free bottle of sloe gin. The exercise was so successful it is planning similar activity in October.

Co-founder Tom Warner said the bartering system enabled the company to start production without tying up capital in buying fruit, and helped the local community get excited about the brand. With this year proving a bumper harvest, he hopes to source enough fruit for 60,000 bottles. The first batch will release in December.
