Dole is continuing to get fresh with its rivals in the ambient potted snacks category with the development of a fruity dessert brand.
The company, which is predicting that ambient potted fruit will become a major healthy eating trend as people seek easier ways of eating fresh produce, is launching Fruit Parfait as an indulgent product for adults.
Combining real fruit pieces on a layer of light crème, the dessert comes in peaches & vanilla, apples & caramel and pineapple & coconut flavours.
An alternative to yoghurt or pudding, each pot contains 1.6g of fat and 120 calories.
Dole has gained government approval to carry a 5-a-day logo on some products from the autumn, and is also putting health tick boxes on packaging. Fruit Parfait will carry tick boxes saying the product is made with real fruit, is low fat, a source of vitamin C, and gluten free.
Andy Coult, director of sales at Dole Packaged Foods Europe, said: “With this product we are taking the brand and category to a new level by extending healthy snack options to include a more indulgent, adult taste.
“Parfait meets increasing demand for nutritious, convenient and tasty snacks.”
In the last quarter, Dole grew its share of the ambient potted snacks and dessert category from 13.9% to 17% [ACNielsen 22 September, 2005].
The category is currently led by Premier Foods with Dole in second place and Del Monte in third.
