Aldi to open eighth depot to fuel growing portfolio in the North
Aldi is to open a new distribution centre in South Yorkshire next year to service its expanding store estate in the North.
The 441,000 sq ft site in Goldthorpe will be its eighth depot. It would include regional offices, create 400 jobs and “provide a hub” for Aldi’s growing store portfolio across South and West Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire, said the discounter.
It also plans to relocate its current distribution centre in Middleton to Bolton in early 2015. All 300 current Middleton employees will be offered the same roles at the new site, which will be around the same size as Goldthorpe.
“Following sustained growth in the North West, the current Middleton premises are no longer fit for purpose and by moving to a bigger and better location in Bolton we will create 100 additional jobs,” a spokesman said.
Aldi expects to create 300 new retail jobs in the North West by the time the Bolton DC opens.
It also plans to open up to five high street stores across London and the South East in the next 12 months. The smaller format stores will mirror the design of its 7,000 sq ft Kilburn store, opened last April.
