Fledgling variety chain Alworths is set to open its first stores in Scotland.

Alworths was formed in November last year following the collapse of Woolworths and currently operates seven stores in southeast England.

The chain will open stores in Cupar and Fife in the next two weeks. Plans are in place for a further eight stores north of the border.

Last month The Grocer revealed that the chain had been scouring the country for new sites to meet a target of 22 stores by the end of 2010.

“We’re delighted to be launching Alworths in Scotland and we hope the stores will be well received by the local communities in Cupar and Forfar,” said MD Andy Latham.

“They are also both situated in busy market towns, which suits our requirements exactly as we strongly believe there is still a desire for traditional high street shopping.”
