Jubilee ‘bigger for snackers than Euro 2012 or Olympics’
Brits will fork out an extra £334m on treats over the Diamond Jubilee holiday compared to a regular weekend.
The increase in spend – measured across treats, food and alcohol – is based on a YouGov survey for Mars Chocolate.
People expected to spend 25% more than usual during the Jubilee weekend, with spend likely to rise 18% during the Euro 2012 football championships and 14% during the Olympics.
The survey follows confirmation from the Local Government Association confirming receipt of 10,000 applications for Jubilee street parties – twice the number requested for last year’s Royal Wedding.
“The weather is finally warming up and Jubilee celebrations are promising to be the first jewel in a crown of multiple British retail opportunities this summer,” said Bep Dhaliwal, trade communications manager at Mars Chocolate, which recently added a British-themed limited edition variant to its M&M’s chocolate portfolio.
Given the British focus of the events, almost one in five British adults said they were more likely to notice and purchase products labelled ‘made in Britain’, the survey said.
