It’s easy to patronise when toasting the appointment of a woman to such a senior role, but the fact remains: women are woefully under-represented high up in our industry. Maybe that’s why so many feeble products aimed at women ‘It’s a pizza… but for girls!’ fall flat.
It’s actually been an encouraging few days. As we report in this week’s issue, Catherine Randle is taking over BP’s retail estate, while M&S has gazumped Asda to give Sara Bradley a top role in clothing. And just last week, Morrisons vowed to double the number of women in its top 100 management roles by 2014.
In the week the FDF said the sector should lure young talent by offering them a chance to “change the world through food”, it’s good to see a few retailers starting to get their own houses in order first.
