I am pleased to see recognition that shoppers are placing more focus on provenance, something which is important with new potatoes. From a consumer view five questions come to mind.
Is there a difference between newly harvested new potatoes sold loose and potatoes in packs?
Are new potatoes harvested whilst in active growth, i.e. tops green, possibly chopped off immediately prior to harvest?
Alternatively, is there much use of chemical destruction of tops to limit size and if given time skins to set, on the way to being sold new?
On the topic of provenance where a retailer uses the word new, would it be useful to have date of harvesting on packs or labels?
Should shoppers expect new potatoes to be retailed within days of harvest?
