I agree with the sentiment of being "brave". Unfortunately we live in a culture where confidence can easily be battered and it is therefore important to believe in oneself to succeed. I personally don't believe that feeling is any different whether male or female.
My early career in the 90's was littered with examples of "glass ceilings" but I had the confidence to be brave to strive for success. On meeting an old industry contact recently, he was enquiring how I had succeeded and the answer was quite simple for me, namely I was just myself and not seeking any special treatment or to be treated differently, but saying that, extremely ambitious. We were discussing the need for his daughters to experience strong role models in business in order to inspire them in their chosen careers. He felt role models were not easily accessible for them, probably because the stats speak for themselves.
It is important for woman in business to share their experiences to motivate the next generations.
I have to say I was disheartened to listen to my niece 28 years my junior, fully qualified in her profession, exclaim of her own work experience upon advising her employer of her pregnancy, her views ceased to be taken notice of. It certainly made me question when life would change in business, perhaps another 30 years may move the dial slightly! On a positive note, after a little encouragement, she has grabbed the bull by the horns and started her own business and therefore becomes another statistic.
I don't agree with positive discrimination to "make up the numbers" either. With the right attitude, enthusiasm and ambition leadership skills can be moulded, I just wonder how many decades it will take for some stigmatised attitudes in business to change.
So be bold, brave and encourage females that they can succeed.
Influence businesses that a diverse employee base can enhance and improve the business environment and performance.
