The industry is striving to make packaging greener but there is lack of clarity as to what the most sustainable solutions are

Thinking outside the box is not as easy as it sounds, especially when it comes to reducing the environmental impact of that box… or carton, bottle or container.

Chris Sherwin, sustainability consultant at brand consultancy Dragon Rouge, goes so far as to say: “When it comes to making packaging more environmentally friendly, brands too often look like they are stumbling in the dark in a seriously un-strategic way.”

You’d think that, six years after the the first phase of the Courtauld Commitment was introduced, finally giving some centralised direction to brands and retailers, the UK grocery market would have the packaging situation sussed.

But although the vast majority of recent packaging innovations have had a green dimension, the strategy adopted by the industry has been far from coherent. Indeed, if anything, things are more confused now than they were.
