Although Brits are still treating their pets, the overall market has stalled – prompting fears the deeper promos seen in the past year are not the way forward, reports Natalie Brown

A philosopher once said you can judge the hearts of men by their treatment of animals.

In that case we’re a soppy bunch, even when reining in our weekly shopping budgets. For, despite the downturn, sales of pet treats have hit record highs over the past year, soaring 9.2% to £390m against a volume increase of 5.5%. But remove treats from the equation and a stark truth is revealed: overall volume sales of petfood have slumped 3% while value has inched up only 0.4% over the year.

Dogfood has fared particularly badly, with value and volume sales falling. And, although continued demand for premium catfood has prompted a slight rise in value, the sub-sector has lost volume. So what has prompted the slump after years of growth and is deeper promotional activity the solution – or a big part of the problem?
