Women are far more likely to abstain from alcohol than men, according to a consumer poll for The Grocer

One of our 10 Things You Need To Know About… Beer & Cider

Twenty-three per cent of women said they were teetotal in a poll of 2,033 consumers by Harris Interactive, versus 14% of men. That means almost two thirds of the 379 people that identified as non-drinkers are female (see below).

As we reveal here, men are more likely to be trying to moderate their intake than women, suggesting many men - or perhaps their more abstemious wives and girlfriends - are concerned about the amount of drink they’re knocking back.

Twenty-five to 34-year-olds are the least likely age group to be teetotal, with 13% identifying as non-drinkers. The most likely age groups to be teetotal are the over-55s, with 21% not drinking, and 16 to 24-year-olds, 31% of whom say they don’t drink.
