Tesco is today creating teams of dedicated bag packers at 400 of its stores to help ramp up service in the run up to Christmas.

The move, which comes as CEO Dave Lewis attempts to improve customer service in store, will see teams of between six to nine packers help to pack bags, push trolleys and collect items from the shelves that customers have forgotten.

All large Tesco stores will also have a dedicated greeter at the store entrance.

“We all know how stressful the Christmas shop can be, but we also know it can be a lot of fun with the right colleague on hand, which is why we’ve invested in having bag packers and greeters,” said Tesco UK retail director Tony Hoggett.

Lewis revealed earlier this month that 6,000 new store staff have been brought in since October.
