Total UK could be sold within a matter of weeks, The Grocer has learnt.

Oil company Total put its 780-site UK forecourt business up for sale in September last year as part of a "review of its UK downstream operations".

Forecourt sources told The Grocer that second- round bids were submitted last week, with Greenergy, which Tesco has a minority stake in, understood to be favourite. Another round of "exclusive" bidding will then start in a few weeks.

The forecourt sector would change "substantially" in coming months, with Murco also up for sale, said one source.
