Spar Austria invests in Volvo eco-trucks

Spar Austria has taken delivery of one of Europe's first fully hybrid commercial trucks.

The 26-tonne Volvo vehicle reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 20% compared with conventional trucks, and is 50% quieter. For speeds of up to 50km/h, it runs on electricity only, making it completely emissions and noise-free. Other hybrid trucks have to make use of diesel engines, even at low speeds.

The new truck showed it was possible to use innovative new technologies on a commercial scale, said Spar Austria head Gerhard Drexel. "As the leading innovator in grocery retail, Spar is very much prepared to invest in new technologies because it is important to set a signal for climate and environmental protection," he added.

Spar said it would use the new truck for deliveries in the Vienna area.
