There’s something about cheese that inspires extraordinary passion in people.

Over the past two months, The Grocer has been searching for 20 British, regional cheese gems for our Dairymen supplement.

Our aim was to showcase cheesemakers embodying the very best of British cheesemaking today – offering great stories, great regional heritage and, above all, great cheese.

The response we got was overwhelming – not only from cheesemakers but, as importantly, from cheese-lovers from around the country, telling us about their brilliant local cheesemaker or a much-loved gem discovered on holiday, which they wanted to share with the wider world.

Our final list of 20 cheeses appears here, with 10 of the cheeses also featured in the print edition of the Dairymen supplement.

Those chosen range from new cheeses created only this year – and fresh interpretations of old favourites – to longstanding regional classics we felt deserved wider recognition.

What they all share are fantastic stories and the passion of those who crafted them. We fell head over heels in love with these cheeses and cheesemakers. We’re sure you will too.
