The National Farmers' Union called on co-operatives to take steps to increase their commercial clout in the supply chain this week. At a meeting of representatives called to discuss the milk crisis, NFU president Ben Gill highlighted the need for more vertical integration in the supply chain for producers to survive the price decline. The meeting discussed the need for an industry macro-strategy, taking into account more effective supply management, and co-ordination of investment in processing. Chairman of the Federation of Milk Groups John Duncan said: "UK producers are concerned about milk prices and are looking to milk co-operatives to continue to develop their structures which will provide market solutions to price problems." A further dairy industry meeting is set for a month's time. {{NEWS }}
