The West Country's biggest supplier of specialist chicken has won a new contract with Asda to supply Freedom Food-accredited corn-fed birds to 100 stores.

Lloyd Maunder said the number of outlets would increase as availability improved, and it is recruiting new producers. Asda is the sixth major retailer it supplies alongside Sainsbury, Morrisons, Somerfield, Budgens and Aldi.

Commercial director Andrew Maunder said: "Our growth in chicken production is very strong and we are anxious to recruit more farmers to meet demand.

"All they have to do is provide housing and labour, we do the rest. That will give them valuable regular extra income."

Alongside the RSPCA-accredited Freedom Food bird, Devonshire Bronze, Maunder also sells a free-range and an organic bird. The three varieties account for 60% of its 500,000 bird-a-week production, with conventional broilers making up the balance.
