Nestlé has revealed that its groundbreaking cans of ready-to-drink Nescafé are unlikely to get an official national launch until "the end of next year". It also insisted the Hot When You Want' tins were still on trial, even though they have been spotted on sale in a growing number of outlets nationwide. The Grocer last month revealed how Nestlé had lost control of distributing the self-heating cans when supermarkets rushed to snap up the £1.19-a-go drink. The multinational giant launched the cans for a Midlands-based-only trial during the summer amid a blaze of publicity and insisted there would be no national roll out until 2002. But the 330ml tins, which use a quick-lime and water reaction at the touch of a button to heat 210ml of white coffee with sugar, are now on prominent display in a host of different retail chains nationwide. As well as being spotted in supermarkets, they are also being sold at Whistlestop and WHSmith stores at railway station sites and at Moto motorway services nationwide. A spokeswoman for Nestlé insisted the move to sell the product into new areas was "always part of our strategy". But she admitted that control over distribution had been difficult once the cans hit shelves in Midlands-based cash and carries. She added: "We are still trying to gauge the attitudes of consumers, and it is unlikely we will launch the product nationally until the end of next year." {{NEWS }}
