Retailers in Doncaster have teamed up to promote the Challenge 21 campaign, which urges store operators to check shoppers' IDs if they are buying age-restricted products and look under 21.

Trade associations including the Wine & Spirit Trade Association, the BRC and the ACS are backing the initiative on 14-16 July. It will focus on off-licences and pubs and will be supported by posters and staff training.

South Yorkshire police are visiting schools to raise awareness of the drive.

Gateshead Council, meanwhile, has launched a crackdown on adults who buy alcohol and cigarettes for minors - known as proxy buying - with possible cash rewards for those who report offenders through the Crimestoppers phone line.

The council wants posters advertising the Crimestoppers number to be put up in every off-licence.
