After founding the Brake Brothers catering group in 1958 with brothers William and Peter, he floated the foodservice business on the Stock Exchange in 1985. It was valued at £370m on his retirement in 2002
What has been the defining moment of your career?
Having a total focus on the catering industry. When we started, the major retailers were dabbling in foodservice - but having a special focus allowed us to grow very rapidly. The other key moment was our flotation. It gave us the funds to expand and make key acquisitions.
What’s been the most influential product launch over the past 150 years?
Heinz or Coca-Cola - simply based on their whole brand management.
How important a tool has The Grocer been to your career?
In the early days we were in poultry and then in the catering industry, so the restaurant magazines were more relevant. But in latter years when we became all-line suppliers I used to read The Grocer every week because it gave me a broad feel for what was going on in the industry overall.
