Wholesaler Makro Cash & Carry has announced details of its new environmental campaign.

Makro, which has just been awarded Carbon Trust Standard Certification, says the Every Day Energy Saver campaign encourages staff to conserve energy. The company is selecting 'energy enthusiasts' from staff across all 30 depots and its head office to encourage colleagues to consume less energy, recycle more and reduce waste.

The drive is part of Makro's bid to reduce energy consumption by 19% compared with 2008 levels and increase its waste-to-recycling ratio to 70%.

"We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and operating in a sustainable way," said MD Hannes Floto. "We have so far saved more than 10% of CO2 emissions, but this is just the start. There is more hard work to be done and, with the commitment of our staff and energy enthusiasts, we are confident we can achieve our targets over the next two years."

Earlier this year Makro said it planned to install walk-in dairy rooms at 17 depots, replace the lighting at 13 depots with energy-efficient lamps and install new chests freezer at 15 depots.
