The Grocery Suppliers Code of Practice came into force today.
The code aims to protect suppliers in their dealings with the major multiples, barring big chains from practices such as altering supply terms retrospectively or asking suppliers to fund promotions.
The government begins a 12-week consultation on Friday to determine how the new grocery markets ombudsman will operate.
Last month it formally backed the creation of the new role in line with recommendations by the Competition Commission.
