Profits at potato supplier Albert Bartlett have increased by almost a third as investment and acquisitions start to take effect.

Turnover for the year to 31 May 2009 increased 9.7% to £181.8m, with pre-tax profits up 27.2% to £11.6m.

Acquisitions and significant investment in growing and packing operations had stood the business in good stead, said sales director John Heginbottom.

"Our ongoing investment in the long-term efficiency of the business has provided a strong platform to trade effectively in varying season and market conditions."

And Bartlett is optimistic of further growth after sales of its Rooster brand, which has partnered with actress Marcia Cross and the Toy Story 3 movie, grew 135% year-on-year in the last quarter of 2009.

However, pressure on margins remained high, directors warned. "The external market remains difficult as retailers continue to battle for market share."
