The past year’s been a game of two halves for Uncle Ben’s. The bulk of the brand’s sales comes from rice, which is in solid volume growth as value slips as a result of lower prices.

Snacks and sauces, accounting for 17.7% of sales, are to blame for most its £6.9m decline, with more shoppers knocking up their own sauces rather than opting for the jarred stuff and the health lobby warning against their sugar content. Mars is still investing, spending £23m on a new Norfolk production line.
