English apple and pear growers were upbeat at this week’s National Fruit Show in Kent, sponsored by Tesco.
Show chairman Robert Mitchell, who is one of the UK’s largest Bramley producers, said: “With good yields and quality fruit, many growers are having a harvest to dream about.”
Mitchell said one sure sign that the mood in the top fruit sector was positive was a high level of entries in the show’s apple and pear competitions.
Soft fruit classes were also well supported, he added. “This year we are expecting the highest number since we introduced the soft fruit category eight years ago.”
