Sainsbury is launching a low-alcohol and low-calorie Australian white wine to appeal to health-conscious wine lovers.

Early Harvest Semillon Sauvignon Blanc has the taste and body of a classic Australian white wine, according to the retailer, but it has an alcohol rating of just 9.5% abv - compared with an average strength of 12-15% abv - and 195 fewer calories than the top ten bestselling wines.

Wine buyer Julian Dyer said: "Out research shows that customers are put off low alcohol wines due to their perceived poor taste characteristics. Early Harvest addresses that concern and will appeal to today's more health-conscious consumer, who is concerned about alcohol intake and calories but also does not want to compromise on taste."

Early Harvest, so called because grapes are harvested earlier in the season, thus giving it a lower alcohol content, is exclusive to Sainsbury and will be priced at £6.99 a bottle.
